Northern Spotted Owl
In the northern California chaparral there is an endangered species called the Northern Spotted Owl. The Northern Spotted Owl is one of the most important species in the chaparral because its what's known as a indicator species. An indicator species is important because as the name implies when it starts to die out and get extinct it indicates that most species in the area will start to die out. Soon after they die the deer, flying squirrels, elk and other near by species are going to start to go extinct. It starts to go extinct because an indicator species means that when an indicator species starts to die it is showing the death of an ecosystem. Its ecosystem is dieing because of logging and they started to log because they want to get rid of the trees to make room for more grape vines.
The Northern Spotted Owl is dieing because of logging and destruction of their environment for example they are taking down the forest that they live in to make more room for grape vines. They are also starting to decline in population from 5 - 6% per year and this is not showing any signs of stopping and it has started to decrease in population even faster.
