Napa River Pollution
· Main problem- polluted runoff (containing salts, selenium, and boron) from roads and agricultural waste is flowing into the Napa River
· This runoff comes from the roads and agricultural land
· The runoff flows down hillsides that have been deforested in order to grow more grape vineyards, even though the grapes are found in abundance on the valley floor.
Effects of the runoff-
· Polluted river that is rich in toxins, such as salts, selenium, and boron
· Numerous studies confirmed that selenium-laced discharges caused bird embryos with twisted beaks, deformed heads and missing eyes
· The river runs off to the San Francisco Bay, which opens up to the Pacific Ocean. The polluted water follows this path.
· The deforestation, which allows all the runoff to enter the river, leads to large carbon emissions, as well as a disturbance in the ecosystem.
· Wine grapes are supposed to be grown on the valley floor, but once planted on the hillside, it acts as an invasive species that exploits resources that vegetation and animals natural to the hillsides need to survive.
